I only download mine when I’m doing maintenance and I’ve got it as a backup.

Plug-ins are free and can be uploaded to your host. I don’t know if you can use them if you use a WordPress hosted blog, I use my own domain name/server so I just upload everything there.

There are two forms of WordPress. The online version which works much the same as blogger.com and a version which you install on your own domain. The plugins are only for the latter version.

WordPress is free to download, but you’ll probably pay to have it hosted. I use Hostgator and they host all but one of my websites for one low, flat fee. They offer one-click WordPress installation, which saves me time. Service is good, and I’ve had no problems with them at all. That’s refreshing!

(The one site I don’t host with HostGator is a h-u-g-e site that needed lots of extra features. I’m paying a lot more to host it… but I still use WordPress to manage it.)

WordPress themes make your WordPress website look however you want it to. Many great WordPress themes are free. WordPress.org has many of them to choose from.

WordPress plugins add features to your website or blog. (You can use WordPress to manage something that looks like a blog, or something that looks more like a website filled with articles and/or images, vids, etc.) Most of them are free, too. Again, they’re at WordPress.org in the “Extend” tab.

I’m just adding a “me too” for Hostgator, from a nonprofessional’s pov.

This was my first experience with a hosted blog, so I was nervous about setting it up, but the one-click installation rocked. Also, when I did need help with a later step, their live-chat help was immediate and very good.

Hi,

I have been a regular reader of your blog and appreciate all the great info you give newbies like us.

However, I would like to know if there is a plug in available which would trawl the net and automatically publish all the relevant postings on a wordpress blog provided the right keywords are put in to the software. I would love to have a blog of my own but do not have the time to put in a post except on the weekends and it would become pretty boring for my readers if I did not give them fresh content at least 5 to 6 times a week.

If you know of any such plug in, I would be keen to buy through your affiliate link.

Thanks and regards

ndugu
