The most notable uses of WordPress for large sites are:
TechCrunch
Probably the most successful wordpress site, although it’s basically just a blog.
Truemors
Guy Kawasaki’s latest venture. One of the most ambitious and well-known uses of WordPress as a CMS.
It difficult to find many examples of WordPress being used for anything other than blogs. You can find examples of it being adapted for online portfolios, galleries, and ecommerce uses, but not on any really major sites.

Yeah, there are loads of major sites powered by wordpress, it just not that obvious because they change the look that much - not to look like WP anymore.
Personally, I don’t use WP myself, but instead use a custom website comment system that I created
We use Wordpress for many of our clients as their easy to manage and with the right plugins rank well with search engines. As a CMS we preffer Joomla but have customized WP for some clients.
We utilize Wordpress and have found it to be the very best blogging platform for our Affiliate Marketing blog. It is extremely versatile, with so many third party plugins that we’ve never had trouble doing exactly what we need for our many blogs that we run. We make a living on the internet with SEO, affiliate marketing and more, and our blogs supplement that. We discuss the income that we make in great detail on our blog, and we’d love for you to come join the discussion!

Wordpress has been a great partner to me in my affiliate marketing. Thank you for the opportunity to share how much we appreciate this great platform!

You know, I have tried using Joomla as a platform, and while it is great on my site, users never seem to get comfortable with it’s backend. Wordpress feels like a worse solution for me, but in reality, it is way more successful due to the fact that my backend users can actually use it. Just goes to show you that the best tool is the one that actually gets the end result you want, not the one that SEEMS like it is going to be the most successful.
It seems more and more companies are switching to the WP back end. It does make sense though to develop that rather than pay thousands of dollars to have a custom CMS built.
Recently, there has been a great deal of inquiries by the
American FTC against blogs and website owners
for not revealing their advertising profits, or potential
relationships with advertising agencies.
What are your personal thoughts concerning how this could hurt
the blogging world?
