Can Wordpress be used as a CMS ?

I know wordpress as a Blog but have been reading about its versatility as a simple CMS also, has anyone had any experience or can you recommend a simple buy effecient CMS. I’ve tried post nuke etc and they are so structured and difficult to fully customize.
