MaxBlogPress Revived: Bringing Dead Plugins Back to Life

Wordpress is  a great blogging platform and it constantly evolves into new versions.

That’s great but the problem is, everytime the new version releases, hundreds of wordpress plugins breaks. They no longer works. Fortunatley, if the plugin author still have interest in the plugin he/she developed then they’ll release the new version. But not all plugins enjoys such fate. Many of them get abondoned and let them dead when the plugin author never finds the time to devote on fixing the plugin.

I’m quite fortunate in this regard as I’m a programmer myself and it doesn’t matter to me if the author never updates the plugin for the new version. I or my team can fix the problem ourselves.

But normal bloggers don’t enjoy such freedom. If they are relying on a plugin and if it breaks then all they can do is wish that someday the plugin author fix the problem. And you know, for many plugins such wish never comes true. Most plugin authors devote their valuable time in creating a plugin when they have free time. But because of family pressure, requirements to earn and other many reasons a plugin author can’t work on a plugin continuously.

Here is a good news: I’m launching a new project called:

MaxBlogPress Revived
Bringing Dead Plugins Back to Life

Here I’m going to give you same luxury as I have:

  • Getting the wordpress plugins fixed which are no longer working due to wordpress udpates and because the original plugin author can’t work on it anymore.

If you have liked a plugin very much but that plugin no longer work in the latest version of the wordpress then you can post about the plugin below. We’ll fix that plugin for free and make it available for download for free to all the wordpress users.

Before making a request for fixing a plugin, please make sure that it’s not a recent problem. If the plugin has broken since some days only then you should wait for the original author to get fixed.

If the plugin has been of no use since lots of days and you are quite sure that the plugin author don’t have time to fix it then please post about it in the comment below. We’ll fix the plugin and make it available.

For example: Wordpress recently released the version 2.8 of wordpress. We won’t be fixing any plugin which has been broken in WP 2.8 as the original author might have plan to update the plugin and might be releasing the new version soon. However if a plugin is broken since WP 2.7 or prior to that then we’ll of course be happy to fix them.

Please post your comment in this format:

Sounds like a great idea for free plugins, but do you also fix paid plugins.

2009-07-15 08:21:41

No, we don’t fix paid plugins. If you have bought a plugin then the creator of that plugin should take responsibility of fixing the plugin. If you are not satisfied you should ask for the refund.

Many thanks for this great service. I have a free plug in called “Ultimate plugins Smart Ping Updater”. After it is installed and activated, the ping log displayed a few lines of what looks like error message. “Warning: array_slice() expects parameter 1 to be array, boolean given in /home/knowled2/public_html/components/com_wordpress/wp-content/plugins/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger/ultimate-plugins-smart-update-pinger.php on line 256″
Would it be possible to fix this?
Many thanks again.

2009-07-15 10:45:17

Jay,

I’m using WP 2.8.1 on several blogs with Smart Update Pinger and it works fine. It could be that during the upgrade, some of the files became corrupted.

Try downloading a copy, unzipping it and then FTP-ing it back to your site, overwriting the files that are there. I reckon it will then work.

Great idea that’s sure to be popular, I have around 40 plugins on my main blog and this does cause conflicts, but there are one or two plugins that i have had to disable because the author can’t keep up with WP upgrades.

2009-07-15 08:57:47

Amit,

If a plugin gets broken for WP 2.8 only then we probably won’t try to fix it as it’s only been a month since this new version has been released. We should wait for more time for the original other to fix it.

If the plugin doesn’t get fixed by the author for some more months then we’ll of course fix it and make it available.

It seems like a blog that already had it installed when it was upgraded continues to work but it will not install on a 2.8 blog.

Big challenge you’re taking on there. I have a feeling you’re going to end up being a bit overwhelmed by requests once the word gets out enough though. There are SO many plugins that haven’t been updated in many versions that I wonder how many people will be asking to have them revived.

In any case - I still think it’s a great idea you have there.

Hi,

What a great service!

I’m fairly new to WP and have yet to do an update myself. I am very nervous about it - one, because of the plugin issue. I was told to go and check the page of every plugin or email the developer and ask, to see if it was updated and compatible with the new version of WP *Before* updating. Boy, is that time-consuming pain in the keester!

May I ask if you think the 2.8 upgrade is worth doing? I heard WP was w having problems with it and were releasing a 2.8.1. And what process do you advise for upgrading? Do you un-install all plugins, make a back-up, and then install the new version via Fantastico, then re-activate all plugins?

Is there an easier way to do this? Do you have a blog post about the best way to update to new versions of WP?

2009-07-15 09:04:11

I suggest to stick with wp 2.7 for a while and only after some months upgrade to 2.8.

Hi Benlahmen. I’m the developer of WP Easy Uploader. It hasn’t seen any love in a while since much of the functionality is now present in the core of WordPress.

Even though I haven’t updated anything in a while, it is still fully functional with the latest versions of WordPress. I’ve even tested it with 2.8.1. The main difference is you will now find the Upload Files link under Tools rather than the old Manage menu.

I’ll spend time this week updating the status on the Extend area of wordpress.org and updating the notes on the site to be relevant to the latest version of WordPress. Please contact me directly if you’d like any additional assistance.

This is great and I don’t mean to sound unappreciative but waiting a couple months is too long. If a month has passed and the original author is unresponsive or unwilling to update his or her plugin, I delete it and find a substitute or just do with out it.

Suggestion: Why not offer a paid contribution option where a certain plugin could be prioritized and moved to the top for repair? For example I use ad rotator on many sites but it no longer works in multi-mode in the widgets area after upgrade to 2.8 ( multiple instance of the plugin can’t be selected). I’d pay to get that fixed. The author of the plugin won’t even communicate with users on his blog about his intentions to repair it or not.

Just a thought and again, not to come across as unappreciative. It’s amazing you would volunteer your time to fix plugins. Thanks!

2009-07-16 00:13:06

Steve,

Thanks for commenting. You’ve made some good points.

First of all I won’t be starting any paid contribution service as it will distract us from the vision I have for this MaxBlogPress Revived project. I’ll consider that as an option but I don’t think we will be going that way.

The reason I want to wait a while before updating a plugin is because the plugin author might have intention to update the plugin soon. If I do the update first then there will be two versions flowing around the web which I don’t want.

By the way, what’s the url of the “ad rotator” plugin you are taking about? I might consider to update it very soon and make it available for download.

Also, you might want to check out Max Banner Ads plugin from us. I’m quite sure you can have same functions as ad rotator and more in the max banner ads plugin.

A generous offer and much appreciated. There is another issue here though and that is plugins no longer required because updates to Wordpress have meant they have been superseded.

It can be very difficult to tell so perhaps you could build a list of these when you receive a repair request for one that is no longer relevant.

Are you going to create a directory of fixed plugins?

Not exactly a directory but there will be a centralized place where you can browse all the plugins we have fixed. Also, there will be a separate forum thread for each plugins so you all contribute there and share ideas/tips/problems regarding the plugin.

Pawan,

This is marketing genius on the scale of X-Factor and Pop Idol. My hat is off to you and I bow deeply.

People tell you what their favourite plugins are, and that they are no longer being developed. You take on the development of those older (but popular) plugins, and in doing so they become yours.

So… Other people do the market research for you, you get to pick and choose the ones you want to do and we ALL reap the benefits. But especially you. ;-)

A true win-win, which is what I love.

Excellent stuff, and very, VERY clever. I’m off to blog about this.

All the best,

Frank Haywood

Ninja Affiliate
Headspace 2

Problem: The way WordPress now stores revisions of changes ends up causing podPress settings to get out of sync with the latest post content.

Summer says
2009-09-03 04:58:38

Sam,

I manage a lot of sites with podcasts, and when the revisions were introduced to WP, it caused a lot of problems, but there are two workarounds.

Try WP_CMS Post Control and select “Turn off revisions”, and your podcast posts should be just fine. As an added bonus, I’ve also added the line define('AUTOSAVE_INTERVAL', 1800); to the wp-config file for a little extra added backup :)

There was an interim release, version 8.8.1, that came out after 2.7 was released to deal with the revisions issue, but yes, the complete overhaul of the plugin is going a lot slower than they’d hoped. If the MaxBlogPress team can help them out, big win all around!

I’m glad I stumbled across this article!

Hello Pawan Agrawal, I bought the Ninja affiliate plugin, but it was more expensive for me because of an additional tax of €13.90. Is it possible to ask refund of this tax? It really made me upset to pay addtional tax…

For the past few months the wp-db-backup plugin no longer automatically backs up my data base and emails it to me. I have contacted my webhost(DreamHost) as this occurred very close to the time they made some changes but they said they could not fix it. I have tried to remove the plugin and reinstall but no luck.

I am currently manually backing up my data base. I was using WP 2.7 when this started. I have upgraded to 2.8.2. Can you offer any help?

Hi Sherry,

You need the much better plugin from Lester Chan - WP-DBManager. In fact he’s written some completely awesome plugins and I use several of them on some of my own blogs.

You can get them all from here:-

Caffeinated Content — http://www.caffeinatedcontent.org/

Doesn’t work and isn’t supported anymore and doesn’t exactly fit the “free plugin” criteria however if you could rewrite it to work properly then not only will I buy it but I know a horde of more people who will.

I realize your all about the charity but if you could bring back this plugin… or get

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-o-matic/

to work in the current version of wordpress I see big money in your future.

wp-limit-posts-automatically
available from:
http://www.jenst.se/2007/12/03/wp-limit-posts-automatically/

Mostly, this plugin will distort the layout and bring the sidebar to the bottom of the main index page.

(I’ve been noticing a few “wp-” plugins that conflict with many other plugins - I don’t suppose you would know why this is??)

Thanks very much for inviting us to bring our dud plugins to you! Just another reason why this blog has been a great “discovery” for me. :)

I also appreciate that you’re posting all of the updated plugins …for those of us who were unaware of some really cool apps. THANKS, guys!

this may conflict with your ninja plug in, but the free version which works on my 2.7 blogs is crosslinker . . . nicest feature is to import export all keywords to and from blogs with attributes……this was one of my favorite and I can’t believe I updated without thinking much about it and now hyperlinking all my keywords takes so so so much time….no response from the actual builders either….

Thanks a lot for making an effort with maybe the biggest problem on the WP platform.
Post-thumb revisited is a very nice plugin which regrettably hasn’t been updated beyond WP2.5.1. (With WP2.6.x the functionality still works but the settings page only partly works - beyond 2.6 nothing works).
Among many other things, PTR’s main function is to generate a (clickable) thumbnail from the top image in a post. It gives a very nice look on your post list and also a nice intuitive way to open the post.
The thumbnail is generated once, the first time the post list is opened - which after that is opened very quickly.
It is also easy to implement in existing sites because you don’t have to eg. re-save posts to make the thumb appear.
There are similar plugins for eg related posts, but nothing like this.
It would be helpful to many blog owners if you could bring it back to life.
Thanks,
Kjetil

Hi,

Can you fix the Feed Statistics plugin? I love this plugin as it allows me to display my feed subscribers without being forced to farm out to Google. But the plugin has not been working correctly since at least WP 2.7

your adsense plugin is absolutely horrible and confusing. it makes NO sense and your instructions are useless. I would re-do this plugin and make it understandable for humans instead of robots.

Hi your plugin “front page by category” doesn’t work as it should. I choose only one category under the settings, but it shows me two other ones… My wordpress version is 2.8.2. Could you please take a look into this? Thank you.

gentlemen. It’s near a quarter past 7pm on a Saturday night. I’d like nothing more to sit here and detail for you every plugin I know of and have encountered that is flat broke, but then I’d not only not make the pub before closing tonight, but I may as well miss work on Monday.

Yep, its worse than you thought. In my experience more than 50% of wordpress plugins dont work out of the box.
