How to be listed by Killerstartups.com and get free traffic

You had an idea and you built a site. You added fresh and original content or you are offering a service which could be useful to many. You say “people will love this!”…but…

Now, you face a little problem: how to make people know about your site? There are millions and millions of website out there…how you bring yours upfront?

Online marketing is though and also time consuming…the time of “if you build it they will come” has long gone and never will come back.

Besides other marketing means you can tap also in the social media field and try tap those who look like are being the distributors.

For example, Techcrunch.com is a distributor (beside being a content creator) because its news are syndicated and cited by many other publications (newspapers, blogs, news services). Once Techcrunch writes about you not only the Techcrunch readers will know about you but also readers from other publications. But you have to have an outstanding offer to make Techrunch write about you…

Let’s focus here now on another distributor which more accesible that Techcrunch. That is KillerStartups.com, a place where startup companies are reviewed and listed.

According to Compete.com (which measures only US traffic) they had almost 632,000 unique visitors last month. If you double that you kinda have an idea of how much traffic receives overall.  Alexa ranks the website on 5,009 position in the world (2,442 in USA). Not to mention there are over 15,000 RSS subscribers.

So, it’s a pretty well established website.

Let’s see how you can get listed there. One way is to use their form which you can fill in and submit. Chances are that they won’t react immediately or at all to that (that was my case).

If you see they don’t respond or not submit your site to their list then try another method (which is described below and which worked for me).

If you look in the image below you will see the “Source” of the news. As you see they also get the news from Techcrunch (because Techcrunch is the 800 pound gorilla of tech news world). There are other smaller gorillas like  Readwriteweb, Mashable, Webware. Like I said, I’m not focusing on Techcrunch now (or other “gorillas”) because it’s quite hard to attract its attention (I’m sure they are pounded with many daily requests so they won’t publish them all). I’m talking about the other sources, less obvious.

In my case it was Launchfeed.com (although I don’t have a startup but a blog).
I listed my blog MyTestBox.com there and voila! In 2 days (if I remember well) Killerstartups picked it up.

But there are other sources there where you can get your startup listed quite easily and thus getting KillerStartups attention right away.

Those sources are presented below.

1) Launchfeed (www.launchfeed.com)
Go to “Submit” then fill out the form in order to announce your launch. You need to have an English-language site, otherwise they won’t approve your submission.  I used Launchfeed to announce my site and Killerstartups.com picked it up in the next two days.

2) SimpleSpark (www.simplespark.com)
Simple Spark is the place to find and share a new world of web applications. Your website/service/application can be listed here, too. Click on “Add Apps to Spark,” then open an account.

3) Listio (www.listio.com)
Listio is a user-driven directory that allows you to submit any web 2.0 application for others to discover, rank and comment on. When you submit a new application, it will be placed in a “pending” area until an editor reviews and publishes it. Looks like a Digg for web applications. Click on “Submit a web 2.0 app link” to create an account.

4) Go2web20 (www.go2web20.net)
This is a Flash directory of Web 2.0 applications. You can send them an email by clicking on “Suggest.”

5) Lo-Fi librarian (www.lo-fi-librarian.co.uk)
This is a blog created by a Master Degree student in Library and Information Studies from UK. You can contact him/her by email and try to have your website listed on his/her site.

6) Emily Chang eHub (www.emilychang.com/go/ehub)
eHub is a personal initiative of Emily Chang (a well know web designer) where she lists web startups. You can submit a site, service, or news on her “Submit a Site” page.

7) FeedMyApp (www.feedmyapp.com)
This is another web applications listing site but without a voting system. Click on “Suggest a Site” link and fill out the form (no account needs to be created).

8 ) MOMB (http://momb.socio-kybernetics.net)
The MoMB (Museum of Modern Betas) is a site dedicated to listing web-based applications on a beta trip. This site is in an alpha version, but you can contact them by email (see About).

9) SociableBlog (www.sociableblog.com)
SociableBlog is a social networking and social media blog which offers the latest news, articles, and video on social networking, social media, social community, and social software worldwide. You can let them know about your service/website by clicking on the “Submit News” link (but you have to register first to use this form).

10) Rev2 (www.rev2.org)
Rev2.org is a weblog dedicated to profiling new Web 2.0 startups and technologies, as well as providing in-depth analysis on the state of this industry. Send an email with your announcement to one of the editors (see the About page).

11) DemoGirl (www.demogirl.com)
Molly McDonald is the editor-in-chief of this blog (which belongs to VPOP Technologies INC www.vpop.net ). If she thinks your service is good enough, she will build a screencast of it and feature it free of charge on her DemoGirl website. You can drop her a note (see “About DG”).

12) WebDev 2.0 (www.webdevtwopointzero.com)
They present a variety of sites which they think are useful for their readers. Go to “Submit a site” to submit your site to them for review.
13) Ziipa (www.ziipa.com)
Ziipa is a visual search engine which accepts website submissions. Just go to “Suggest” and fill out the form. They will review your submission and approve/reject it.

14) Dzine blog (www.dzineblog.com)
Dzine blog is all about designs. Here you will find inspirational designs and some good tips in logo, graphics and web designing. Contact the owner (Contact page) and tell him about your website (especially if you have a great looking website).

Note: I have chosen only those that accept English-language sites, but there are many others (Spanish, German).

Being listed in KillerStartups got my site a spike in number of visitors during 2-3 days. Another advantage is that your URL may get bookmarked on social media websites like Delicious and others like that which can also drive traffic to your website.

Let us know if you have the same success getting listed on KillerStartups!

And if you want other people to know about this way of getting listed there then bookmark and share this article.

Great idea. my site has already been reviewed by killer startups though and you can check that here http://www.killerstartups.com/User-Gen-Content/gigathoughts-com-share-your-thoughts-expertise

but i will still try other alternatives to increase traffic

I submitted my site to two of your listings. I was kind of turned off by the idea of having to register at some site with the chance that my submission would be denied in the end. All in all, this is a good list. I submitted to #1 and to #7. We’ll see what happens. It would be nice to see more traffic, but I’m using a slow-and-steady wins the race approach. :)

I’m using some of these from now on.

  8. Duane Spears 17. May, 2009 at 8:42 am #

Thanks, I did not know of any of these sites. I appreciate your help.

I used all of the sites. I am on the “first-to-the-finish-line wins the race” approach. It is my understanding that first place generally earns substantially more than 2nd place.

I must add… maxblogpress keeps offering such sterler info it’s so embarrassing to be in the receiving end… feel need to give back as well.

You guys championed my taking on WordPress blogs and turning all my static sited into blogs, then I went ahead and installed your socialize it plugins etc…

You guys have all the ingredients to be guru online marketers.

    Thanks for the update.

As always useful information. As HSN says “slow-and-steady wins the race” and it is important to explore all avenues.

Most people fail to check the nature of the service they are submitting to before doing it. This will save a lot of time and wasted effort.

If you have twitter based tools, tips or WordPress plugins then you can submit them to

    Hope this is useful.

Thank you. As a new blogger, and a seller of online materials, this really helped to open my eyes. The assumptions, or things you mentioned in this, were right on the mark. Frankly, I was naive to think that when we built my blog/website, traffic would just somehow find its way to us.
It certainly has taken more work than I thought it would, and your tips here really help.
Thank you, it is nice to find good content, that is both helpful, and most importantly, free.

  28. PussyCat 18. May, 2009 at 1:21 am #

A poorly scripted marketing gimmick to have us visit those sites mentioned here. But who cares?

    • MyTestBox.com 18. May, 2009 at 2:42 am #

You don’t just visit those sites. You subscribe to them…and in return you might get traffic from Killerstartups (if they will showcase your site/service on their site).
I suppose you want traffic without any efforts? Like I said, those days are long gone…

  29. indr@ fotogaul.com 18. May, 2009 at 2:26 am #

    Hi,

Thanks for the valuable information. I didn’t know those sites existed. I’m sure it’s going to help a lot in building backlinks for my site.

Btw, I don’t understand what you meant by “Submit your blogging success stories”? Where will the stories appear?

  47. tkm 04. Aug, 2009 at 11:16 am #

Great article and exactly what I was looking for!

My story is the reverse – I submitted it to KillerStartups.com and it got reviewed pretty quickly (it’s currently number 2 in the top 10!). I was amazed by the traffic, so I started to look for other services like KillerStartup.com, which is when I stumbled across your awesome list.

I’m not too sure what I did. I guessed they liked the idea. Check out the review here: http://www.killerstartups.com/Web20/freelancestudents-co-uk-freelance-jobs-for-students.

I’m going to try some of these other alternatives now to increase traffic.

    Thanks
