How I Doubled The Traffic To My Blog

Hi, my name is Mark Krusch and I just wanted to share with you how I managed to get my blog traffic to double in about one month’s time!

I bought a domain name and pre-made blog back in June of 2007. It came with automated content in the form of “scraping” articles and news items from the Internet. I had some mild success with it but it just never really made enough to even pay for its hosting fees. It used Adsense as an income generator and I made a few cents per month with it.

Here are the initial stats of my blog:

It took until January of 2009 before I even made my first $100 and finally got a check from Google! That’s 19 months to generate $100 in adsense income! Not much to shout about eh?   ;-)

So in August of 2008, I decided to totally revamp the site (which had earned a page rank of “2″ by then). I got rid of the scraped content and posted real reports of my own fishing experiences and added a few posts of videos from you tube as well as a couple posts from Yahoo answers.

I lost my page rank , but I figured that would happen. So I started trying to drive traffic to my in earnest in late 2008. One quick method was using traffic exchanges and while that does get some traffic to your site, it’s not usually targeted traffic (and consequently, not many clicks on the Adsense ads).

Here’s a picture of my 2008 site’s stats:

You’ll notice a fairly large spike in the traffic for February 08 as that when I was heavily pushing the site in various traffic exchanges. That’s a favorite tactic I use to get an initial surge of traffic to any new website I create. Things continued on and the site made a little more money from Adsense during the year.

Enter a fairly new IM person (Alex Sysoef) who created a free report about having your blog post get sent to all of the social sites by using ping.fm and a WordPress plugin called PingPressFM . As I was already a ping.fm member, I read the report, added the plugin to my site and implemented the techniques described in mid March of 09. You can see how my traffic jumped by looking at my 09 stats:

The traffic doubled from February to March. And it tripled from February vs. April! And the majority of this has come from web 2.0 sites! Not bad heh?

I also started using Maxblogpress’s plugins in April and this has also helped in getting and retaining traffic generated from the numerous social sites. I currently use: MBP unblockable pop-up, MBP ping optimizer, MBP Optin form adder and Psychic Search. These are all excellent plugins and I highly recommend them.

Oh … my Adsense earnings are now averaging between $15- $20 per month because of the influx of traffic.

    Nice post!

I don’t know how to increase my income from Google AdSense. I only know how to make a lot of traffic but I was confusing to write an article in English

    Hey Mark

Yeah..!! Great post and I do believe that MBP’S plugin’s work.

I’ve already got a few of them including Ninja Affiliate…

Haven’t had them long enough to see an increase in traffic yet…

But hey…I’m in this for the long haul anyway…

    Cheers.

I don’t know about that plugin but I do use another ping.fm plugin which everytime I publish a post, the plugin will send it out to ping.fm which sends it out to all my social network…. so yes it is a good way to get your post seen a gain more traffic. The only downside is that ping.fm is often down so you have to double check that it has actually sent and if not do it manually through ping.fm so I always my ping.fm dashboard in a tab and check it every post and i have to trust that my scheduled post go through.

Thanks for sharing the free traffic generation technique. I’d opened an account with ping.fm but not used it much, because you need to create to time to initially set up accounts at the social bookmarking sites listed there…I will also look up the pingpressFM WordPress plugin. I’m using some of maxblogpress plugins e.g. the optimizer. I’m not into fishing yet :)
I visited your blog though. The idea of using videos I believe causes visitors to stay longer on the site and probably influences them to see more as an authority…

    Hi all,

Thank you for your comments! In case you were wondering, I got this free report from Alex at:

    Free Report

This is just a direct link, and no, I don’t make any money from that! lol But I believe you’ll find it an excellent resource and it will definitely increase your traffic IF YOU TAKE ACTION and implement the techniques demonstrated.

Here’s to all of your successes!

    Hey Mark,

Very good information, especially the pings. It’s a wonderful thing to have put into your blog. However, I do have a question about using traffic exchanges – I thought Google doesn’t allow that when using AdSense? Just curious.

    • Mark Krusch 23. Aug, 2009 at 10:34 am #

      Hey Kevin,

Excellent question! And one I previously researched. Here’s what Google has to say about using Traffic Exchanges:

So the big G is NOT against using a traffic exchange, just against generating clicks falsely and avoiding the possiblity of harmful activity to its advertisers. That’s why they don’t recommend it. They don’t say that you can’t use them – just be careful if you do!

I usually use a traffic exchange for 1 month’s time to get a new site known, while I’m building content for the site. Then remove it from the traffic exchange in order to get “true” visitor statistics from that point on.

Thanks for the credit Mark and link to my report. It works for me and many of my students – time and time again and glad it helped you to get some traffic.

Generally simple ideas are responsible for best results and anytime we try to overly complicate things – we get less effective results :-)

    Cheers!

Thanks for the reference, Mark. It’s just that my account got closed while I was out at sea. The only possible reason was that it was on a traffic exchange site. I wasn’t even around to do anything. It’s cool though. My wife will get an account today.

Some time ago I used an automatic traffic exchange with adsense. My mistake,
I did not know that Google was against it. They let me know, after using it for a while, that I will be loosing my account by keeping up this practice.

Trafiic exchanges helped me in the past , there was a good one quassia , it has changed name now , but is now a 2.0 site that you post articles to and it sends traffics.
Google is funny , to get on well you must get traffic without them, like using 2.0 sites, but if you get too much , like 1st page yahoo they stop sending traffic and drop your click prices…go figure.

    hi Mark
Thanks a lot for your article – I love to read success stories about traffic from REAL people, with REAL experience.

One one hand there is nothing worse than implementing a traffic generation tactic, that doesn’t work – BUT on the other hand there is nothing more motivating than seeing with your own eyes that a certain strategy actually works, and your stats suddenly become very entertaining to study.

    And don’t ever forget:
WITHOUT TRAFFIC TO YOUR SITE – You’ll never make any money online :-)

    Best wishes
