How We Make Money Online at CNY-Webdesign and 3rdPartyBlog

Thanks to MaxBlogPress for this great idea and the chance to tell you my story.  I started a couple of years ago to learn how to create a new Blog and then started the learning process of how to make some money from the Internet.

I used a lot of free information and then purchased many (too many) schemes and programs on how to make money online to the great benefit of the program seller and a net loss to me in revenue.

I had been blogging on Google’s Blogger platform for about a dozen years but it was all free information that I gave away.  Then I found out about WordPress and was lucky enough to find Caroline Middlebrook’s free download on How to Install and Operate a WordPress Blog.  I believe it is still available for free and though the platform has had several updates the rudimentary information in the eBook is still valid.

I now make money in several ways.  Google’s AdSense program I have a love hate relationship with.  Google is all about making money… for Google that is.  I operate over 100 websites and have removed AdSense from all but two niche sites that pay a hundred to two hundred per month in recurring income with no additional work needed by me now.  That is not much money but I learned a lot in the process.  Do NOT put AdSense on all of your sites because the sites that have little or no conversion pull down your over all rate that Google pays you for the sites that you do receive good clicks on.  Best to pick some high paying niche sites and drive traffic to those niche sites.

I also make a few hundred per month with affiliate ad programs of which there are a large number of Affiliate Advertising Management companies like; CJ, LinkShare, ShareASale, Pepperjam, Market Leverage, ClickBank and a great many more.  There is likely an affiliate sales program for almost any consumer product in the world, you just have to search for it.  Amazon has a way that you can offer every thing that they have to sell in all categories, and they provide you with tons of widgets and methods to match their products up to your site.

In my case, I have two products through LinkShare and several through ClickBank that pay out the best for me.  You may find some that work better for you. It is a matter of choice and timing.

I will save you the expense of buying the get rich quick programs that you are bombarded with every day.  Just like in the movie “The Graduate” with Dustin Hoffman, where the word was “Plastics”, the word here is “TRAFFIC” !!!

Everything is about traffic.  Traffic equals sales, and sales equals income.  Simple right?

Here is what I do to get traffic to my current and also to my brand new websites.  Select a domain name that is either very catchy (meaning brandable,) or better to select one that is a keyword or short keyword phrase of the product or business or industry that you are building your Blog about.

Install the latest version of WordPress and activate Akismet to reduce spam comments, then install AllinOneSEOpack, and Google-XML- sitemap plugins.  Learn how to take advantage of these plugins and get your keywords targeted in your header and tags.  There are plenty of forums and Blog posts about how to best utilize plugins just do a Google search.

I then start a small campaign to get the site listed almost immediately in the search engines.  I go to www.launchfeed.com and list the site, Digg it, Stumble it, Delicious it, and make sure to use Mister-Wong.com because you will receive a high GPR 5 do-follow backlink from Mister Wong.  There are dozens of other social bookmarking sites available and you might have a better choice of ones you prefer, but these work for me.

Now that you have it indexed go to the greatest of all free tools out there, Twitter.com!  During the recent outbreak of the flu epidemic I immediately set up a site about the Mexican Flu, not with the idea of monetizing it, but I am truly interested in this sort of a threat because I have a health condition that would not be helped if I were to catch a serious influenza.

In the first week I drove at least 10,000 new visitors to this brand new website and after looking at the stats it ALL came from my constant round the clock Twittering.  Traffic has tapered way off now but it will be back next fall and winter season when this Mexican Flu will start up again.

So here is how I ended up making actual money from this whole process.  I became very adept at setting up websites using WordPress and selecting a nice theme that would work for any given topic, so I build Blogs and static websites for clients now at:
www.CNY-webdesign.com and I have a separate business where I do the actual blogging for business clients.

For this separate business I set up a Blog relative to their product or as an extension of their company website and then I write topical Blog posts about their business or industry and drive new traffic to their existing or new website.  You may read more about this service at www.3rdPartyBlog.com.  It works great and I make a good steady income from it.

Get rich quick?  Hell no, you have to work at it, what a shock!

These little blog posts you put here are very revealing and helpful.

I have put your advice to work for me, and it works, and my domain name tells it all for my blog, which is…..”My-healthy.info/4u” I have spent 1 1/2 yrs posting everything about health on this blog. Google now is placing me on page one for lots of posts I add. It blows me away when I find my blog right on top when someone searches for something about healthy info, and related to some post I have made about a disease or health problem they have.

I visit this blog regularly, thanks for your work in helping others succeed.

Great post. Persistence and constant grinding will get you success on the web. Just looked at a video from John Chow. This dude has been blogging consistently since 2005 and is killing it. How? Passion, persistence, and some patience. I plan to achieve the same success. I wish the same for you all here!

I can totally relate, because I design sites as well, and traffic is absolutely the key. I will definitely take heed to the adsense advice as well as listing the sites on the 5 sites that you listed above. Thank you for the helpful information and inspiration!

  20. lafatak 28. Jun, 2009 at 12:21 pm #

Not convinced about the credibility of the author. A web designer who uses a blog with a theme designed by someone else?! An about page that still contains the default ‘replace this text with your own’ block!! Doesn’t mean the advice is bad, but geez, would you hire a web design company who didn’t even make a custom theme for himself? Guess lots of clients might not notice that kind of thing, but I would be more likely click on the theme link to hire the that designer if I liked it, than hire CNY…

Good article, I learned a lot from it. Have to check out those sites, like
launchfeed etc. One question though, how long is Google’s blogging platform around already?

  22. Rich Hill 28. Jun, 2009 at 2:17 pm #

Wow, I wrote a real long answer to all your nice comments and thoughts but it did not get published, so will try again with shorter answers.

    Thanks to all who commented.

You might all be interested to know that about two weeks after submitting 3rdpartyblog to launchfeed, I received a notice that killerstartups.com had selected it for one of the only 15 sites per day that they review out of the millions that come on line all the time. Between killer and now maxblogpress we are getting some reall nice traffic and I thank you all for it.

When you visit 3rdpartyblog you will do me a very big favor by using their vote button because then that way the review will stay up in the most popular area. Thanks a million for those who vote.

  25. Rich Hill 28. Jun, 2009 at 2:26 pm #

To the person that commented that we do not use custom blog designs, you are absolutely correct. We do have capability in-house to provide such but would rather invest our time in keyword research, content writing, and building backlinks. We primarily write for the search engines and of course it has to me easily read by humans also. thanks for reminding me of the about page and we will fix that. Just a case of the shoemakers son goes barfoot. Really appreciate constructive criticism.

  26. Rich Hill 28. Jun, 2009 at 2:31 pm #

To Hermann who is extremely observant, you were correct in questioning the length of time Blogger has been around, as I believe it is only about 10 years. However I was on freewebs.com before that and on Compuserve long before there was any such thing as the world wide web. My first personal computer that I owned was in 1979, an Apple II with absolutely no disk drive whatsoever. You had to load and save programs to a cassette tape recorder. Our business is new but we are not newbies. Thanks for the comment.

It was so genuinely thrilling to receive such nice responses from all of you and thanks again to maxblogpress.

Oh, and one more thing and then I’ll shut up. (well maybe… LOL)

If you have gained anything at all from this post it makes me very happy.

Now if you would do me a favor and everyone vote for this post with the handy dandy social buttons at the bottom of the page, I promise to stand on my head and spit wooden nickles. OK, promise is a little strong.

    Hi there.

This post could not have come at a better time for me.

I am starting to look at another way to earn extra cash thru Web design and helping folks do things with wordpress, so I found this post to be very helpful and informative to say the least.

My disease is starting to limit what I can and cannot do on any given day, so the thought of working at home at my own pace is certainly something I am investigating.

Thanks to Mr. Hill for a very timely post.

Rich has plenty of good stuff to say,

We actually used this technique last year.

Interestingly enough we did it slightly different and on our own.

As we are a Internet marketing firm in Minneapolis, Mn.
We bought our domain, built a wordpress site, seo’ed it manually,
installed anti-spam plugins, optimized it with the all in one seo tool, then plugged it on, twitter, facebook, linked in, posted in criagslist and wrote some reviews for some software companies.
We recieved a page rank of 3 in our first month, and only posted more reviews and sales offerings when we needed clients.

we now have as 8 months later a pr of 5 and get approx 400 hits a day, and only edit our page one a month and have clients waiting.

So We hope this will help anyone out there, but remember you have to create your image thru your clients eys and follow thru with what you promise.

    Good luck folks
    Troy C.

Rank on top, awesome results and congratulations.

Arthur, more is better when it comes to links and self promotion, good luck.

    Thanks to all commenters.

    Do-follow link from Mister-Wong.com? Nofollow!
    Pioter

  36. Rich Hill 29. Jun, 2009 at 1:42 am #

    Pioter,
I just checked and you are right. Mister-Wong has changed their back-links to no follow. That’s too bad. They were definitely do follow a few months ago when we started using them. Everything changes, but we will still use them as a good back-link service.
Thanks for calling our attention to this.

So now that they are a “no follow” what does this mean? I am still not understanding this part….

We have been online since about November and were using the automatic blog plugin with the Twitter tools set to tweet with every new post, which was giving us some pretty good traffic. Unfortunately, the plugin has stopped working, so now we are back to posting manually. That has allowed us to have more control over the quality of our content, though, so I can’t say I am too disappointed. That is what we are really about anyway–giving people the information need to make money in their own home based business without trying to cheat the search engines. Still, we are working on boosting our PR and add new backlinks all of the time. Also, article marketing on Squidoo has helped tremendously to expand out web of content.

“I had been blogging on Google’s Blogger platform for about a dozen years but …”

Well, to be exact, I’d confirm with www before posting anything questionable.
Why not saying a “several years” or a “few years”?

“In February 2003, Google acquired Pyra Labs, owner of Blogger, a pioneering and leading web log hosting website. Some analysts considered the acquisition inconsistent with Google’s business model. However, the acquisition secured the company’s competitive ability to use information gleaned from blog postings to improve the speed and relevance of articles contained in a companion product to the search engine, Google News.”
