Coolerchoice a success story

September 12th, 2009 by coolerchoice

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

I started cooler choice late September 2008, i tried to cheat a little being new to blogging so i bought a domain with a PR 6,but that did not work at first it had PR6 then it went down to PRO and no traffic so by October i had to start afresh.
Anyhow lesson number 1 do not buy expired domains because they all go back to 0 PR,so rather than do it all wrong i made a list of things to do, heres my list:
1: choose a niche
2.see what other blogs are writing about and see what other blogs are in same niche
3.write about something you know a little about
4.get keywords right, i always keep away from all keywords that are used to much, i used Google adwords keyword tool and use all keywords between 10000 and 25000 hits a month this way better chance of getting seen on Google because less competition
5:Join as many social bookmarking sites as possible, Digg, technorati, stumbleuponTwitter here are a few popular ones but there are many more
6:Post relevant comments to other blogs in same niche, example if your writing about the environment reply to posts on environmental blogs and add your site in comment
7: This is the most important one, ask other site owners for a back link, always be polite and explain what sort of site you have got, usually if its in the same niche they will say yes, heres a tip add a link back to thier site on your site before asking.
8:Add to directoroies under same catagary as your site
9:Try not to spam every high ranking site with comments and links, always stick to the same niche as your own site, because this can damage your PR in Google.
10: Add comments and posts to forums here is a good one PR10 Google Forum
So i stuck to the above list, and i add my posts everyday to relevant social bokmarking sites, i got back links from some websites in the same niche and between October 2008 and January 2009, CoolerChoice got a Google PR of 3 out of 10 so i carried on doing the same routene , and in April 2009 Coolerchoice went up to a PR 5 and now gets around 3000 hits per day.
I am at this moment working on a whole network of blogs in differant niches, i hope they pay off in the long run, please feel free to visit my sites and comment on this post, thankyou for reading;

Great tips..but, I don’t like to join so many social network..because it distract me..I just choose them that can only give me benefits..My experience, build a good relationship among bloggers is the great way to maintain your traffic for the long term

Een Rockstar, there is other aspect of this - if you are submitting every post of your site to such a trustable (and not as worthless as others) socials as Digg then you get banned very soon. And you’d need to change domain again to get back in :)

Selif says

On the other hand I’ve long since given up on MOST social bookmarking sites, Digg & Technorati in particular, because the links you get from them are all rel=”nofollow” and therefore are useless in Google’s eyes.

Sorry but i can’t agree with sentence “don’t buy expired domain”. Of course u have bit right but we need to say this loud - Don’t buy expired domains with high PR just for their PageRank. There is no sense, it’s easy to get cheated (fake PR is not really hard to achieve isn’t?) and even if you’ll get real one is hard to keep this pr on it.
So what to do? Simply buy domains with big amount of backlins - problem in this case is that u can check it in yahoo and domain with milion backlins can be simply banned in big g. so u have to be carefull with everything but… At the end is worth it. I have some tools which is basically checking all req. data from google, yahoo, archive.org and few more what is givin me overwiev of expired domain. Worth investement :) Why worth? On 90% on my websites i have traffic, high rank in serps and a lot job done before start :)

Interesting that a PR6 can get wiped out — even when site promotion is ongoing, or is this the case where Google lists it back to 0 once it has expired?

Btw, great tips on keeping up the social communication to enhance your site’s awareness.

Blogging is a great way to build credibility and popularity. Some people like myself tend to really struggle with the whole writing process. So, putting very good content up on a regular basis can be a challenge even when you are good at what you do. A great alternative is to find things people have already written on your topic, niche, or field of expertise and make a great comment on it. Not only does it add value to the discussion but it might draw a little extra interest in what you have to offer.

I disagree completely about buying other domains. They don’t lose their PR… you just have to know what you’re doing and do it right to protect your main blog.

Other than that piece off ill advice you gave, I think everything else was spot on… However from my brief look at your blog, looks like you monetize just through adcents so their is really no commercial intent by you as a product or larger biz (granted I did take a brief look so I might have missed something).

If however you do have a blog that has a true commercial intent with products, and many other paid things that you set up other bloggers will not that happy to link to you.

So what we do to gain trust is guest blog for them… they get free content and see that you’re the real deal. that always starts a great relationship.

Thanks for sharing. These are some great tips. I think keeping a blog focused on the main topic and relevant is a major factor. The same with comments. As you stated, comment on blogs and forums that relate to your niche. This means targeted traffic for you.

As Dan says all great advice except about buying expired domains! I completely disagree.

Maybe you got duped with fake pagerank? Redirecting a domain to site with high pagerank will trick Google into giving the domain name the same pagerank… Just one of the many possibilities that could have caused your pagerank dip…

Sorry, I don’t have eenough experience buying expired domeains to comment but I would be concerned a bit about the big green arrows pointing straight down at your Adsence block. I do belive that is against Googles TOS. Great work on the pagerank position. I hope to duplicaate your results in the nesr future. Thnaks for the tips.

People have had great success with buying aged PR domains BUT you have to leave the Whois info unchanged. Changing that WILL cause Google to reset the rank. :(

I have other examples, when completely changed whois did not change Google’s attitude :) I’d say you should retain content topic of the domain. Then you won’t loose backlinks and, as a result, PR.

When you say hits are you referring to your webalizer stats or do you mean 3000 unique visitors per day according to a reliable statistic package such as Google Analytics. If hits, then it ain’t accurate because it can be robots, spiders, etc.

Selif says

I doubt that it’s a case of auto-blogging or scraping. This series of success stories is all guest blogging as far as I can see. Plus since I’m subscribed, I get an email (that does not have the ‘canned’ feel to it) announcing each new post. Just check the part above at the end of the post where it says:

<blockquote cite=”Submit your blogging success stories and get FREE passive traffic, fame and popularity”

I doubt that would show up on a scraping autoblog

No, he’s right. There isn’t a single piece of original content on that “blog” that I can find, and if your really believe he’s getting 3000 hits a day like he says, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. With that Alexa and Complete.com site ranking, he’s be pulling 500 hits a day MAX, of which I’m guessing most are bots he’s using to drive his ranking up. Alexa says his average time on site is 21 minutes which is just absurd for a aggregation blog like that one. No one is going to spend 21 minutes reading one-two line RSS titles from other blogs. Note the links on the sides, he has 10 other content less “blogs” he’s just interlinking to drive the PR up.

I’m guessing his true bounce rate from real visitors is in the 80-90% range. Find a single “article” on that site with a comment, I dare you.

He’s likely going to try to sell it to some poor unsuspecting fool. Hopefully they come read through these comments first.

Please get original. Thanks.

Excellent advice. You hear quiet often that buying expired domains with high rankings is the way to go. According to your experience it isn’t. Although there are those here that seem to disagree, it still shows that not everything you hear or read about marketing online is truthful. This myth was probably propagated by marketers looking to make a quick buck unloading domain names. I have never done this myself (bought expired domains), but have heard about unethical marketers that have faked page rank.

@Neil - Not changing the Whois sounds unethical to me too. Say I had a domain name for sale and someone in the porn industry bought it to use as a redirect to their porn site. I certainly would not like it if they left my information in the Whois and I became associated with that porn site. I wouldn’t want to start receiving porn spam email like gangbusters because of it either.

To declare that “all expired domains [with whatever PR] because they all go to 0″ based on your single experience, it’s like saying that “all people who bought expired domains with high PR and blew it — did not know what they were doing”. Both statements are wrong because of the word “all”. The new process you embraced works better for you this time, so stick with what’s working now.

Thank you for sharing with us your nice story. Few people wrote before me, to buy a selected expired domain it`s NOT a bad choice. Congratulations for your 20,275 backlinks who help you to have PR5. Great work!

The increasing of number of visits on your blog from April it`s an indirect effect of a higher PR, that help you with better positions in search engines classifications for search results.

@Sarah, the calculation for PR it`s an exactly formula for Google and there the main rule is the quality and number of backlinks. Many people lose in PR and positions in Google index without nor a change in their websites/blogs and they can`t understand why…

Most of people rush for backlinks, some search for quality backlinks and just a few monitorize their backlinks… In this article from Wordpress Blog you`ll understand why is essential to do the last thing.

A higher PR and lots of traffic are important, but for those who want to have a business from blogging, the optimizing their blog for a better conversion will bring to them the result of expression “traffic = money”.

The most important question is how is that traffic converting to $$$? Maybe the guest poster should have indicated that. If very little, what’s the point of having a lot of traffic and a PR5 site when that traffic is not converting to $$$. Not all traffic is the same. If the site is getting mostly social traffic then I would venture to say that the traffic is hardly converting to $$$.

I am not sure how this would work out for me. I had a Technorati rating of something like ‘top 7% of all blogs’ but maybe 12 visitors a day. Is this because people like blogs that taste good and technorati likes blogs with good taste? Like Charlie Tuna, I may be working too hard on the wrong things…

So unless you know something is a FACT, don’t believe it. You’re not a domainer, so you don’t understand domains.

I disagree 1 out of 20 niche sites do well and that is with a lot of work. I have tested this extensively if it where easy to do everyone would be rich. The above tactics don’t result in a pr 5 blog or site as pages are ranked pr is built up over a series of years not 1-2 years.

Like a few others above, I have to disagree about buying an expired domain being a really bad idea.

I have bought lots of these and around 50% of the time the domain keeps its PR and traffic.

The benefits of buying expired domains WAY outweigh the downsides of buying brand new domains and having to build them up from scratch!

That’s just my (experienced!) opinion.

Chris :-)
