How I Took My Blog From A Baby To An Established Website
Blogging is a process. One that does have a learning curve. Most new bloggers start off by focusing on many of the wrong things and attempting every traffic generation and monetization strategy that one could find instead of focusing like a laser on building the identify of the blog and committing to a single strategy. I know I made these mistakes during the early stages of my blog, 20smoney.com.
My Early Days
I focused on all the wrong areas during my first year of blogging. I tried to find the coolest, most expensive theme (and I did). I implemented every type of silly monetization strategy such as banner stripe ads and I even had a pop-up box designed to entice visitors to sign up for my email list. The result? A mediocre website at best with no real purpose.
Despite some level of growth, the blog did not grow nearly as much as I would have hoped. The amount of work that i was putting in was not translating into sufficient growth. I “hit the wall” like many new bloggers do.
A Renewed Focus
I contemplating a complete halt to my blogging activities just because I wasn’t seeing the return on my time. Rather than quit, I decided to try out a drastic change. The first thing to go was my theme. I got rid of the magazine-like, fancy theme with moving featured posts and images, and went to a bare-bones theme. The reason? I wanted my readers to visit my site for the content; therefore, I needed to have the theme be about the content and nothing else. The results were incredible.
As you can see from the below graphic, the immediate impact of the theme change was a huge drop in my bounce rate. From averaging over 60% rate, I took the bounce rate down to the 4-5% range instantaneously. This was step number 1 in taking my blog to the next level. If people don’t last more than a single page view, it’s pretty tough to grow a website.
The next step was to understand my objective. Was I trying to create a real interactive community of readers who had a similar interest (in my case, finance)? Or, was I simply trying to gain search traffic and get ad clicks? If you haven’t answered this question yourself, you need to. I decided that it was time to focus on quality and gaining a real readership versus short term search traffic and Adsense numbers.
I put an emphasis on quality content and became re-energized. Why would someone want to visit my blog? I ask myself this every day. If I can’t come up with a good answer, then obviously, my blog will not go anywhere. Similar to step one, the results have been excellent. The traffic growth which I document each month with a monthly blogging update, has been encouraging.
The below graphic shows the steady increase in traffic i’ve been receiving mainly due to my renewed focus on quality content.
Please note that January’s traffic is through January 11, 2010. I’m on pace for my best month yet.
Conclusion
To sum up my advice, it would be to have a fantastic understanding of your objective as a blogger. What are you trying to accomplish? When you can answer that, you should be focused intensely on achieving that goal. Do not dabble in multiple strategies or try out a new approach every month. Determine your own approach for your blog and commit to it. If you do, you will see nice results.

Thank you for this valuable and easy to understand advice. It’s been awhile since I’ve really sat down and thought about what my objectives are. Awesome article!!
yeah i agree that ,Recently my friend recommand me a cool place where i can meet some rich and famous people ,If you are looking for a wealthy lifestyle or looking for a business partner, maybe you should check it out,MeetMillionaire.com ,Good Luck!!!
I Thing the Bounced Rate is the biggest Priority from the Serps. If you will find the way to announced your own articles with an eyecatcher or and great Textlink erveryone can put the rate down.
Internal links and powerfull descriptions are the best way to do this.
Thanks for your inside Look.
Thomas
Just by changing your site theme you managed to bring the bounce rate to 4 - 5%. That’s awesome.
Very interesting article. I’m bookmarking it, so I can read it when I have a bit more time and see if I can use some of the tips for my own site. Especially determing what my objectives are for my main site is something I really need to do. When I started it I just thought about making money through adsense clicks, but now it’s a lot more and I want to create a living community with it. Maybe even add a forum to it. Guess it’s time for me to sit down and think about it.
Good article. What are your thoughts about video tutorials on the page with your article? Have you ever tried it and measured the results? I’ve been doing this for a little while now and the comment feedback is definitely better. I agree too; an open space content theme works very well. I use one myself.
Cool post! I decided to start pulling down a lot of the extra ads on my blog so that I could get my readers to focus more on the content. Thanks for sharing it.
I thought I’ve been sharp razor enough. But seeing my own results and after reading this I know I must be narrowing down my focus and strategies again.
It really is all about having a plan and sticking to it. I often find myself fluttering about from one supposed great idea to another and not seeing the results I want. Thanks for providing some thought leading advise.
Great Post! In a nutshell - to many of us (bloggers) are focus on what’s in it for me rather than the value we should bring to the lives of our readers via our niche content.
Thank you for thought provoking post - many of us can need to be told again and again that to keep focus is what brings us forward.
Especially your documentation of changing the bounce rate is illustrative - where did you got the graph from ?
Continued good luck

Thanks for a great article. I think we all struggle with what to do on a daily basis. I try to focus everyday on doing something positive whether it’s writing a blog post, an article for the article directories, doing more keyword research, etc. The point is I think you hit it on the head - we probably all get too deep in the weeds with daily tasks that we sometimes forget what the real objective should be. Your article helped bring that back into focus. Good luck!

I can share a similar experience. These were the mistakes when I started out with my blog.
- was too focussed on the monetization and had Adsense ads popping out at all random places on the blog post. I removed the clutter and now have only one ad per post and at a fixed location.
- I had a fancy theme but the problem with it was that it had a dark background with white text. So it looked nice but was a bear to read. I changed it to Copyblogger theme a clean and uncluttered theme.
I had the objective part set. I wanted to focus on the best work that is out there in the field of self help and personal growth and bring to my readers byte sized versions that contained the core essential insights.
Please check it out if you have a chance and let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Excellent advice that is simple to implement. Focus on giving value and you win. Focus on trying to sell and you lose…it’s that simple. Don’t invite people to your party and try to sell them right when they walk in the door. Give them a week or even a month of constant value and then they will want to buy from you. Remember the phrase KISS “Keep Is Simple Stupid” and have fun.
Best Regards,
Kory
Great advice, perhaps just what I need. I do tend to apply everything that sounds promising to my blogs. Now, I will take your advice and narrow my focus on a specific course of action for both content and traffic generation.
Nice blog you got here. I’d like to read something more about this theme. Thank you so much for giving this information.:D
Thanks ! It Was Really Easy To Understand The Basic Thing Of Blogging !And Wish Me Luck !
Thanks for reminding me about what I got started in this business for…that is to provide quality. It’s so easy to get side tracked into the monetizing mentality and forget your original objective.
I too am now into the second year of my blog (just barely). The first year is a huge learning curve for most and from it we learn. While most bloggers start blogging just because with no fixed idea of what they want, an ever increasing number are looking at blogging as an additional source of income, so it is understandable that their primary focus is on making money. I know it was mine.
A funny thing happens on the way to the bank … the progress is glacial if at all. A self and blog review ensues. That is when bloggers realize that there is more to blogging than just putting up posts and ads.
I do not fully agree re stripping your ads to the bare bone. Very successful bloggers have a good number of ads on their sites. If you have say only 2 or 3 ads and then as your traffic grows and the number of ads on your site increases then it might be offputting to the early followers. If the ads are there to start with and you grow your traffic then the “offence” factor is a non-issue.
It is however, all about quality content and developing a community … then the traffic increases & the likelihood of making money does too.

Muy Interesante!!!
Interesting concept of changing your blog by removing the fancy themes etc. I may have to try this on mine. Thanks for sharing this information.
We have been doing the blog thing for awhile now Still haven’t hit the mainstream but working on it. All I know is it is a ton of work. The excessive efforts will pay off.
Thanks for the great thoughts in this post.

I have tried to put together quality content and I believe that I have succeeded on my 3 blog sites, but I still have no community building happening.
It is quite frustrating. I know that I don’t post as regularly as I should which is probably a contributing factor, but quantity and quality don’t go together well with a limited amount of time so I’ve focused on the quality.
I do get some good comments, but rarely see much traffic from my target audience — the comments are from people who come to my site from Twitter, etc. who like my writing but they’re the wrong audience. 8=(
I’m still working through it all and hope to see some results soon.
My take on the issue with ads is that;
if your blog is just starting out, you do not want to load your site with ads. The reason is that you do not have enough content to have visitors stick around that long… And there is a tendency visitors will be guarded if your site appears like it’s out there just to make Adsense money or attract other forms of clicks.
Thank you very much for this article…I have heard from several different places now talking about focusing your blog on content & not so much with monitization…I am going to be pulling Adsense from my blogs…I’m not doing well with them anyway & I agree that it might be putting people off…My bounce rate is in the 50’s & 60’s…Will definitely implement these strategies…Thanx again…Kenney

Hi - I like the idea of going lean and clean with your blog, but wonder what other things you have going on with the theme. For instance, I went to your site and was impressed that you greeted us from this post. I realize there must be many wordpress plug-ins for that. Is the one you use a MaxBlogPress or other plugin or script that you can recommend?
BTW: Personable greetings like that make it a bit more interesting to stay and have a look around. I feel first impressions and personal touch is everything! But a huge point of concern for me when I looked on your blog: I didn’t see your name on this post at maxblogpress as author or on your blog in the about or other obvious place.
I think that raises a red flag in the financial business–visitors should be able to find out who you are at least on the about page. I don’t usually stick around if I get the feeling someone is afraid of using their name… Did this just get dropped while streamlining?
Hope you will choose to be a real person who happens to also have a real blog!
Best regards,
Donna
Very true! Content makes the blog!
Excellent Blog,Very Interesting concept by editing your blog theme, Sounds like some information I might want to aply to my blog as well,Allways looking for some new ways to improve my content and information for the search engines !
I know that I don’t post as regularly as I should which is probably a huge factor,When it comes to SEO but i do have some really interesting information on my blog , that’s what makes the difference when it comes to being noticed !

I have been trying lower my bounce rate for some time, but so far I haven’t been that successful. I haven’t thought about changing my blog theme though.
What helped me, was when I added similar posts, and top posts above the fold.
I agreed with the author, I was seriously started blogging since Oct 09… but still need more and more time to get started earn money…
Thank you for great post and how make baby step to riches.
